A Simple Song / Megan Hanlon

I used to think PB&J was inedible, but now I know that you just need strawberry jelly.

Grape jelly is too tart for childhood, too wounding on the young tongue and mind. You need strawberry preserves, if you have it, those juicy bits of whole berries swimming among the gelatinous gobs of flavor like still-forming ideas. But if you can’t access preserves in those smallish bottles with the gingham printed tops, then jelly or jam will suffice.

And the peanut butter should be creamy, no jarring contrast between the squish of jelly and stern crunch of chopped peanuts to thrust your senses into confusion and questions of what-the and who-why.

It is enough merely to eat, not to think, not to have reason and responsibility enter into the picture just yet.

The bread should be soft, too, not toasted or crusty and thick. A nice Wonder Bread or Sunbeam brand will do just fine, a cushion to get lost in like a hug, no need to get fancy.

Just you, the sweet and slippery strawberry preserves, the thick and sticky peanut butter, the pillowy white bread, and the whole of the afternoon spread out before you like a song waiting to be sung.
