What would you love to see in the submissions?
Something that brings joy and a sense of hope in a year that seems to make us question what happiness, safety, cohesion, and solidarity feel like. Yes, I love the roars of rage, but how about a collective roar that instills pride and shows us how important connecting with others still is.
What is your superpower?
Finding fun when the moment feels absolutely miserable or dull. As a physician, I have learned that laughter is the best medicine and happiness is contagious. I think it stemmed from a childhood in which I was often left to entertain those younger than me in situations that lacked access to toys and video games. Now, I am undeterred by traffic, long lines, or unexpected ordeals, because I will find something to make me smile, find a story in that moment, or, if nothing else works, find satisfaction in having survived that god-awful corporate function. It's mindfulness through mirth. My monkey brain cracks wise, while others may simply go quiet. It's why you usually find me smiling.
What is your writing process?
For flash fiction, it starts with waking up with a story rattling around in my brain like a dream. A spark that wants to ignite on paper. In the absence of such inspiration, I will use prompts from contests and literally sleep on it to see what comes to fruition in the morning. It is in these mornings, when the house is quiet, and my mind is calm, that I can sit with a cup of tea in hand at my laptop and start a story. I am the ultimate pantser, and I let the story that plays in my head like a movie spill out onto the page. When done, I make another cup or two of tea and let them all steep before tackling edits.
