These were originally written as a five year plan, but they've served me for almost a decade now:
To still feel unhurried in life. If "happiness is a now that is unhurried", I want my nows to be unhurried.
To have a sense that the pace and cadence of life, love, work, rest, and fun are aligned with the pace and cadence of my soul.
To feel like life is good enough so as not to need vacations - although optional, voluntary, pleasurable vacations are a welcome thing.
To have built-in time for solitude and puttering. To turtle.
To be engaged and connected - but not trapped. To be near the exit in the auditorium that is society (or on stage, but with the option to end the show at any time). Part of... but not trapped by. Connected... but not entrenched or compromised.
To be aware of compromises made - and why and how - and of their costs. When possible, to avoid accommodations that come at a cost to freedom of being. When compromises are made, then awareness of the motivation and the importance of the reason (even if it is "only" love) should offset the toll it takes on authenticity.
To laugh. Hard and often.
To create. Regardless of audience or accolades. the importance lies in the output.
To foster gratitude and joy and understanding. When in doubt, error on the side of compassion and empathy.
To have space - even if only in the privacy of my mind or the parallel lives and homes I inhabit - to live unedited.
I don't really do New Year's resolutions, but, whenever I need to check in with myself to see if I like the direction my life is headed in and to re-assess if I'm following my goals or if my goals need reassessing, I tend to recycle these.
